Hillary Clinton and Aamir Khan talks about Education

http://desihits.com/assets/images/clinton590.jpgAamir Khan and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton participated in a conference this past Saturday, July 18th, to discuss the ills of today’s education system in India. They shared the stage at the 140 year old St. Xavier’s College in Mumbai expressing reforms on what needs to be done to better the education system in India.

Khan, a long time member of Teach for India emphasized the reasons for higher education and his feelings on the ailing education system that exists today. He has hopes that teaching will one day be the highest paid and most respected job in India. To him, a rightful education is the key to success and empowerment and he feels this kind of education is not being practiced.

“Today, students are mostly focusing on memorizing their subjects because they have to face questions like ‘Did you come first?’, ‘How much did you score in mathematics?’” Khan pointed out.

Khan also emphasized on the fact that today’s education system hardly encourages children to ask questions.

“We should encourage those minds that are thirsty and hungry for knowledge. Children who believe in questioning, searching, disagreeing and not just memorizing and cramming should be appreciated,” he added.

Clinton, who is the brand ambassador of the Times of India’s Teach India initiative that is based on the Teach America model, couldn’t agree more with khan’s ideas. She added to the speech by praising Khan and highlighting American education ideals that may work in India.

“Aamir has come up with some excellent points to tell us what all is required to make education important. We have the best of educational institutes in our country but they are not for everyone. Part of our challenge is to provide education to those who don’t get it easily,” Clinton said.

Well it looks like Aamir Khan certainly has a strong passion other than acting. Hopefully, his ideas and celebrity status will help the Indian education system give kids the best education they can get.
