Stop taking bets, the NPD numbers are in and the scrutinizing has begun. First, in the console sales, the total sales were down 38% from last June, but grew month-over-month from May.
As normal Nintendo’s consoles top the list. Even if you consider that Nintendo sold nearly twice as many Wiis last June (666,700) it is still impressive to be selling more than a quarter of a million every month this far into the console’s life cycle.
The Xbox 360 is the only console to show an improvement year-over-year. An impressive feat for the oldest home console of this generation.
Sony’s systems plug into the last three spots on the charts. The rumors of a price drop and the PS3 Slim may be damaging the potential for the PS3 more than anything else at this point.
The Consoles:
June 2009
Nintendo DS — 766,500
Wii — 361,700
Xbox 360 — 240,600
PlayStation 3 — 164,700
PSP — 163,500
PlayStation 2 — 152,700
May 2009 (last month)
Nintendo DS — 633,500
Wii — 289,500
Xbox 360 — 175,000
PlayStation 3 — 131,000
PlayStation 2 — 117,000
PSP — 100,400
June 2008 (last year)
Nintendo DS — 783,000
Nintendo Wii — 666,700
PlayStation 3 — 405,500
PSP — 337,400
Xbox 360 — 219,800
PlayStation 2 — 188,798
In software sales, the big news has to be that after 29 months Wii Play has finally (FINALLY) fallen out of the top 10. Of course the next Wii game with a pack in, Wii Sports Resort, is set for release soon, so look out for that to be on the charts for the next 29 months.
The big winner with 419k on the Xbox 360 alone is Prototype. A heavy marketing campaign and a lack of this type of game on the platform since Crackdown, surely must have helped out Prototype.
A number of sports related game fill out a large portion of the top 10. With UFC 2009: Undisputed on the 360(338.3k), Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 on the Wii(272.4k), and Fight Night Round 4 on the 360(260.8k) and the PS3(210.3k). Interestingly, the PS3 version of Fight Night Round 4 sold nearly as well as the 360 version. Even more interesting is that Tiger Woods didn’t even make it in to the top 10 with any platform besides the Wii.
Familiar friends, WiiFit and Mario Kart Wii — who are both missing their friend WiiPlay– sold 271.6k and 202.1k respectively. Remember that story about the Tortoise and the Hare? Well, when we tell it to our children it’ll be The WiiFit and the Prototype. A new friend has joined those two game, EA Sports Active at number 3 with 289.1k.
Finally, the open world genre games all made it onto the top 10. Red Faction: Guerrilla for the Xbox 360(199.4k) and critical darling Infamous for the PS3(192.7k) taking up slot number 10.
The games:
June 2009
Prototype (360) 419,900
UFC 2009: Undisputed (360) 338,300
EA Sports Active (Wii) 289,100
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 (Wii) 272,400
Wii Fit (Wii) 271,600
Fight Night Round 4 (360) 260,800
Fight Night Round 4 (PS3) 210,300
Mario Kart Wii (Wii) 202,100
Red Faction: Guerrilla (360) 199,400
Infamous (PS3) 192,700
